Nature

Over the coming months, wNetSchool will present Internet-based lessons and activities based on the NATURE TV series on PBS.

  •  Check out the regularly updated NATURE Web companion piece on Thirteen.

  •  View Original Lesson Plans, Selected Sites and Software Samples developed for the PBS Series NATURE.

    Original Lesson Plans
    •  Don't Forget the Elephants, Grades 5-8
Using online resources from the NATURE show THE ELEPHANTS OF AFRICA, students will conduct research on elephants. Based on their research, they will create original stories, poems, and illustrations that will be submitted to a Web site dedicated to elephants.

    •  Hello, Young Blubbers!, Grades K-4
Using online resources related to the NATURE show TOOTHWALKERS: GIANTS OF THE ARCTIC ICE, students learn about the walrus, a fascinating Arctic mammal. The lesson encourages students to learn how different physical adaptations enable an animal to thrive in a harsh environment. Specifically, students conduct an experiment looking at how the walrus's blubber and other adaptations allow it to regulate body temperature.

    •  I am the Walrus, Grades 5-8
After exploring the Web for information, photos, and QuickTime movies about walruses, students write illustrated autobiographical essays from the point of view of a walrus. The final illustrated essays can be posted to the Web or exchanged with other students.

    •  India's Endangered Tigers, Grades 5-8
Students research wild tigers that live on the Indian subcontinent. They contact conservationists via email to inquire about how tigers are protected around the world, and to learn some strategies for protecting wildlife in their own communities.

    •  Indian Ocean Explored, Grades 5-8
This lesson is based on the third episode of the NATURE series, INDIA: LAND OF THE TIGER, called UNKOWN SEAS. In addition to viewing the program in class, students examine the rich array of marine wildlife that lives in waters surrounding the Indian subcontinent. They explore the relationships among organisms in coral reefs. They learn about environmental dangers to coral reefs and research methods to protect them.

    •  Let's Roam Together, Grades 5-8
By conducting online research, students will learn about the physical traits and behavioral patterns of buffaloes and wolves. The class will present their findings and observations by turning their classroom into a mini wildlife park.

    •  The Great Grizzly, Grades 5-8
Students generate questions about grizzly bears and use the Internet to research the answers. As a culminating activity, students create a life-size mural of a grizzly that is annotated with the information they've learned.

    •  The Queen's Empire, Grades 5-8
Students will conduct Internet research on a variety of ant species and their habitats. The goal of this lesson is to allow students an opportunity to observe ants in their environment. After researching ants, students will create an ant farm in the classroom to continue their observations.

    Selected Projects

In addition to the NATURE site, we recommend:
    •  Grand Canyon Explorer: The Geology of the Grand Canyon
      (http://www.kaibab.org/geology/gc_geol.htm)
This site is an excellent source of geographical and historical information about the Grand Canyon.

    •  Sea World: Walruses
      (http://www.bev.net/education/SeaWorld/walrus/walrus.html)
This site was developed by the educational department at Sea World, and offers extensive information about walruses and a guide for teaching about walruses and other marine mammals.

    •  The Grand Tour
      (http://www.gorp.com/gcjunkies/links.htm)
This page is a collection of links to other Grand Canyon sites. The sites indexed include facts and figures on the Canyon, a gallery of pictures, information about the Hopi, weather forecasts, landsat satellite photos, NASA images of the Canyon, and images of bird species.

    •  Zoo in the Wild
      (http://www.edv.it/ZOO/welcome.html)
A "virtual zoo" that depicts animals in their natural setting offering images, sounds, and information on hundreds of mammals, birds, and reptiles.

    Software Projects for
Nature

    •  People of the Jaguar
Using the Internet, CD-ROMs, print resources, and an episode of the NATURE program SPIRITS OF THE JAGUAR, students explore ancient Mayan culture, identify significant Mayan contributions evident in our society today, and demonstrate their understanding via a PowerPoint presentation.

    •  Ain't it Grand: A Canyon in the Making
The Grand Canyon has been called a window to the evolution of the Earth. Using online and CD-ROM reference resources, as well as NATURE's Grand Canyon show, students will explore the making and history of the Canyon, and create a dynamic HyperStudio presentation based on their findings.

    •  A Virtual Zoo
Using online and CD-ROM reference resources, students will study the issue of endangered and threatened wildlife, debate the ethics of zoos and captive breeding, analyze the pros and cons of electronic zoos, and finally create a dynamic "Virtual Endangered Species Zoo" using HyperStudio.

    •  Birds and Balance
Students will study the ecosystem of a given species of bird, explore that species' relationships within its food chain, and create a multimedia slide show.

    •  Gardens
Students will explore the underworld of gardens, identify the elements of a wildlife habitat, design a garden incorporating these elements, and publish their designs by creating dynamic Web pages.
