INNOVATION

From awe-inspiring new techniques that can eliminate disease at the very outset
of life, to practical means for ensuring a healthy old age, INNOVATION, a
three-part series produced by Thirteen/WNET, features the latest in
ground-breaking biomedical treatments and research.
The series premiered December 1997 on PBS. The companion INNOVATION Web piece on
wNetStation features original articles by noted journalists, original animations
highlighting medical breakthroughs, a Technology Update of related news articles,
a glossary of terms, and a Debate bulletin board on the issues.
Now wNetSchool brings you original lesson plans, to help you use the INNOVATION
programs and online content in your classroom.

Genes at
Work, Grades 9-12.
Using content from the INNOVATION Web site, students
will investigate how dominant traits, genes, and DNA determine the physical
characteristics of a subject. Students will explore related Web sites to gather
additional information and then test their findings using interactive elements.
Students will also identify dominant and recessive traits, make predictions about
the physical characteristics of a chosen subject, and make a prognosis on the
health of the subject.
Join the
Debate: Should Humans Be Cloned? Grades 9-12.
After visiting several Web
sites related to the topic of cloning, students will be asked to consider several
ethical questions and then post their responses, in the form of well-conceived
essays, to a Web discussion forum devoted to cloning.
