Scientific Notation Calculations
How Big? How Small?
Print this worksheet and complete the scientific notation calculations.
Here are examples of how scientific notation can be used in making calculations:
Example One:
17,000 x 0.0056 = (1.7 x 104)(5.6 x 10-3) = (1.7 x 5.6)(104 x 10-3) = 9.52 x 101
Example Two:
(14,000)(0.0045) ÷ (0.087)(3,000) = (1.4 x 104)(4.5 x 10-3) ÷ (8.7 x 10-2)(3.0 x 103)
= (1.4)(4.5)(104 x 10-3) ÷ (8.7)(3.0)(10-2 x 103)
= (6.3)(101) ÷ (26.1)(101)
= (0.24137)(1)
= 0.24137
Use the examples above to help you with the following problems:
1. (1,200)(0.0076) =
2. (23,045)(0.0345) =
3. (1,987,000)(3,000) =
4. (0.00453)(34.456) =
5. (1,245,000)(0.0045) =
