Here are examples of how scientific notation can be used in making calculations:
Example One:
17,000 x 0.0056 = (1.7 x 10^{4})(5.6 x 10^{3}) = (1.7 x 5.6)(10^{4} x 10^{3}) = 9.52 x 10^{1}
Example Two:
(14,000)(0.0045) ÷ (0.087)(3,000) = (1.4 x 10^{4})(4.5 x 10^{3}) ÷ (8.7 x 10^{2})(3.0 x 10^{3})
= (1.4)(4.5)(10^{4} x 10^{3}) ÷ (8.7)(3.0)(10^{2} x 10^{3})
= (6.3)(10^{1}) ÷ (26.1)(10^{1})
= (0.24137)(1)
= 0.24137
