Circulation City Project Instructions

The Project
You are a member of a city planning group. Your job, which you will choose to accept, is to design a city modeled on the human circulatory system. The plan you come up with will be presented on a poster and should include representations of the heart, all the components of blood, blood vessels and other accessory organs (such as the lungs, spleen, brain, bone marrow, etc., all listed in the The Circulatory System Chart Organizer ).

First Thing's First
There are some specific jobs that you'll need to decide on before beginning the planning process. One person will need to be the leader who leads the team meetings. Another person will need to be a draftsperson who draws sketches of the group's ideas. A third person will need to be a librarian who checks on the accuracy of information. A fourth person will need to be an author who writes down important information. If there are only three members on a team, then the leader should take on one of the other roles. Decide who will take on each role and have the leader report this information to the teacher.

Theme
Decide on a theme for your city, and make sure your analogies match (no trucks driving on railroad tracks, etc.). Your city should be a cohesive, well-run metropolis, with all the parts mirroring the functions of the human body. Refer to the Circulatory System Chart to make certain all structures are represented in your city. Your city theme and analogies must be approved by your teacher before proceeding. Your teacher will suggest some Web sites for research, but you may use any other resources (textbooks, library books, experts) as well.

Finished Product
Your finished product can be two - or three-dimensional - you may have things sticking out of your poster, glued on or attached in some way - but it needs to be able to hang on a wall. The poster may not exceed 24" x 36". You may wish to do a Power Point presentation instead, but you'll need to get this idea approved by your teacher before proceeding.

Materials Allowed
You may use basic art materials for this project. Construction paper, glue, scissors and other such items will be available in the classroom. You may supply additional materials from home if you wish.
