      Planning the story

For this assignment you need to write at least the beginning of a story that deals with assimilation. It will probably be easiest for you if you set the story in contemporary times, but this is not required.

Start by jotting down some ideas about your characters and plot, then refine your ideas by answering the following questions:

1. What will be my take on the theme of assimilation?










2. What kind of tone will I use? How will this help me convey my theme?










3. Who are my main characters? What are their motives? How will I show this?










4. What cultural or historical context (or setting) will my story have? How will I show this?










Most good writers look to other writers to get ideas about how to write their stories. Given this, you should look to Philip Roth's stories for help on how to achieve tone, theme, etc.
