Ant Farm Activity Worksheet
The Queen's Empire
You are going to create an ant farm so that you can observe the behavior of ants.
To make the ant farm, you need to collect ants from your backyard or nearby park. Your teacher will take a large glass jar, fill it with soil, and place the ants inside. The ants will need a damp sponge and some food: these items should be placed at the top of the jar.
The ant farm should be kept in a dark place, so the ants will feel as though they are underground. During certain hours of the day you may place the jar on a table and make observations. You should record your observations about the ant farm in a journal or log book.
Ant Farm Observations:
Questions to answer when looking at the ant farm:
- What species of ant are you observing?
- How are the ant body parts different?
- What are the ants taking to their rooms and tunnels?
- Do the temperature changes in the classroom effect which tunnels are being used by the ants?
Explain what changes you see.
- What type of jobs do the ants perform?
- What type of foods do they eat?
- Where do they store food?
- Where is the queen ant?
- Do you see any eggs, larvae, or pupae?
- How do the ants use with their antennae?
