As instructional leaders, principals focus on strengthening teaching and learning. "One of their main functions is to organize adult learning in the service of student learning," explains Dr. Sandra J. Stein, Academic Dean of New York City's Leadership Academy. Effective school leaders provide opportunities for teachers to collaborate and learn from one another, offer support and coaching as needed, and find time to observe teachers in the classroom. Principals also evaluate teacher performance and ensure that professional development opportunities meet teacher needs.
