Concept to Classroom: WebQuests

In this workshop, the participants examine how WebQuests can be used in virtually any classroom with appropriate computer access. WebQuests allow students to use and apply information from the Web (rather than just look for it). The following questions are addressed:
    1. What is a WebQuest?
      a. Participants examine how a WebQuest requires students to conduct online research in an inquiry-oriented environment.

    2. What are the benefits of WebQuests?
      a. Participants examine how using WebQuests in their classrooms can help build a solid foundation that prepares students for the future.

    3. How did WebQuests start, and how have they developed since they became popular?
      a. Participants examine how Dr. Bernie Dodge helped spread the use of WebQuests in schools and universities.

    4. What are the essential parts of a WebQuest?
      a. Participants examine the six critical components in a WebQuest.

    5. What kinds of topics lend themselves to WebQuests?
      a. Participants examine why WebQuests can be applied to a wide range of topics, but how they aren't equally appropriate for everything.

    6. What do I need to create a WebQuest?
      a. Participants examine how a WebQuest is really just a Web page in a particular format.

    7. What are some critical perspectives?
      a. Participants examine the challenges and obstacles to designing a WebQuest, such as time limitations.

    8. How can I use WebQuests in conjunction with other educational techniques?
      a. Participants examine how WebQuests are based on the ideas of inquiry, constructivism, and cooperative and collaborative learning.




In this workshop, the participants look at applications for WebQuests in the classroom and view some real-life examples so that they can see how WebQuests work.
    1. In Classrooms
      a. Participants examine video clips of teachers using WebQuests in real classrooms.

    2. In Schools
      a. Participants examine Web sites that contain examples of WebQuests used in various schools.

    2. What do WebQuest lesson plans look like?
      a. Participants examine a lesson plan guide for developing a WebQuest.




In this workshop, the participants examine a few successful WebQuests and then look at ways to overcome some difficulties they might face when getting started. They will also explore ways to support their students while they are doing WebQuests. The following questions will be addressed:
    1. What are some simple ways to get started?
      a. Participants examine how to get started using WebQuests and how to look at examples that reflect their own personal interests or relate to areas they teach.

    2. How can I use WebQuests if I have limited or no access to the Internet in my classroom or school?
      a. Participants examine the different ways a computer can be used in order to maximize student participation.

    3. What are some challenges I might face?
      a. Participants examine some challenges and obstacles to using WebQuests, such as time limitations and the nature of the Internet.

    4. How do I assess student progress?
      a. Participants examine how assessment is an ongoing process in WebQuests, since they must acti as coaches by constantly conducting mini-assessments as they help students and provide feedback.

    5. How do I introduce WebQuests to parents and the community?
      a. Participants examine how WebQuests help parents by raising their expectations about what kids can accomplish.




In this workshop, the participants recap the key principles guiding WebQuests and use a lesson plan framework for designing a WebQuest in their own classroom.
    1. Key Principles
      a. Participants examine the four key principles guiding the development of WebQuests.

    2. Step-by-Step Planning
      a. Participants use a WebQuest lesson template created by Bernie Dodge.
