INVOLVING PARENTS IN EDUCATION
This program includes a 30-minute videotape and a 54-page Leader's Guide. The video features communities in McAllen Texas and Indianapolis where parents and school leaders have created successful parent involvement programs. The program shows how schools use parent/teacher meetings, home visits, parent volunteers, and other strategies to encourage and support parent involvement. Based on the work of Joyce Epstein (Center for Research on Elementary and Middle Schools, Johns Hopkins University) the video explains five types of parent involvement: 1. Improving parent skills 2. Developing better communication between educators and parents 3. Increasing volunteer support 4. Increasing learning at home 5. Involving parents in policymaking. Activities in the Leader's Guide give viewers an opportunity to reflect on the why, how, and what of strengthening parent involvement in their schools.
