Video: Dutch New York
As we celebrate the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson’s voyage to America, historian Barry Lewis takes us back in time to rediscover the first European settlers in New York — the Dutch.
CH 13 is the only station having wonderful stories and documentaries. The news programs and it’s commentators are the most trusted in the American broadcasts. Thank you.
As always ch 13 once again offers high level, entertaing, educational and just simply quality programing. Thank you ch13 for providing us with such wonderful broadcasting.
Your video presentation is just like stepping back in time. Very understanable and clearly thought out.
DUTCH NEW YORK is among the best television productions of the early history of New York City. Indeed, by including the experience of Native Americans, Africans, Swedes, Quakers, Jews, and many others of the diverse populace and 18 languages which were spoken in New Amsterdam before 1650, it shows just how “much more than Dutch” are the roots of NYC. Thanks for posting!
Love, love Mr. Tantillo’s paintings!
I recommend The Island at the Center of the World by Russell Shorto, which explores all of this in greater detail.
Thank you for retelling the story of the NEW AMSTERDAM so eloquently and visually ….
Feel sorry for the extinct animals/plants of the Manhattan Island
Happy 400th Anniversary Henry Hudsun!
with sincere appreciation
Wonderful, enlightening presentation.
Thank you, CPTV
Thanks for the wonderful site!
The combination of Len Tantillo’s paintings, Charly Gehring’s detailed commentary, and the images of Manhattan island from the Manahatta Project give us a sense of New Amsterdam that is spot on. Thank you!
Barry Lewis and the other contributors bring Dutch New York to life. Very interesting. Very entertaining. One wonders what if the Dutch were able to hold on to the colony into the 1770’s…
As a descendent of Lodewyck Pos(t), a tavern keeper shown on the 1660 Castello Plan map, I am thrilled to see a wonderful and informative story about my Dutch roots. Thank you Thirteen for another great program.
Fantastic history usually forgotten in the books students read. Another great resource is a book by NYU professor Russell Shorto, Island in the Center of the World. Barry is terrific.
This was very educational I enjoyed very much learned a lot of things about Manhattan. I often wondered why the streets downtown were always going East. I also would like to see Gravesend Brooklyn if posseble that has a lot of hystory also. Keep up the great work I enjoy watching.
Another truly stunning exploration of history and society in which we live and love! Incredible work Barry!
I was riveted. Twice! If Barry Lewis had been my high school history teacher, I never would have concluded that history was boring.
[...] interactive website from Channel Thirteen, PBS’s local affiliate, includes video clips, interactive features such as timelines, maps, and documents, and information about Dutch New York. [...]
Wonderful Program ! One error with which I would like to take issue: Peter Stuyvesant was NOT born in the southern part of the Netherlands. He was a Frisian – he was born in Friesland (Fryslan)which is in the northern part of the Netherlands.
As a direct descendent of Adriaen vanderDonck (10th generation) I was riveted and most fascinated by your documentary. I would love to see and learn more facts about the Dutch in New Amsterdam.
Can a DVD of “Dutch New York” be purchased for my library ? Great job !!
Thirteen and Mr Barry Lewis never cease to amaze, entertain and educate me . I find these programs so very enjoyable as well as cultivating my love of my adopted city New York. Growing up and raising my children in New Jersey was wonderful, but my heart belongs to New Amsterdam. Thank you all.
A thoroughly enjoyable presentation. Having ancestors who reportedly arrived in New Amsterdam in 1624,it was of particular interest. I have visited both New York and Albany and have an appreciation for the area and its history. Thank you!
Truly enjoyable and educational. We’ve had the opportunity to walk with Barry Lewis and this is history at its best. Thank you for making it available.
Just saw the video on PBS-WMHT, and wished it was several hours longer. Any plans for a longer version? Kudos to all contributors, and what a great topic!
Hats off to James Nicoloro for producing this wonderful documentary and to Barry Lewis for his riveting delivery of the history. As a Dutch New Yorker, I’m glowing with pride.
If, and when, the dvd becomes available for purchase, could I please be placed on the contact list? We have relatives in Ridderkerk, Netherlands who are most interested in seeing this! Thank you.
Wonderful job, everyone. I am really delighted that you are making this show available over the Internet. Hats off to the sponsors as well. I wish all TV were as good as public TV.
Just watched the show and liked it for the most part. However, the English just took over? There was not ONE word regarding the relationship between the House of Orange-Nassau and the House of Stuart, how William became William III of England AND Statdholder of the Netherlands. This was a huge omission and reflects a cancerous nationalism that smacks of American propaganda by omission. Way disappointed with Thirteen. BOO!
Please tell me how I cam get the Dutch New York PBS show on a DVD or VHS. My husband wants it for Christmas. Thank you.
Good program.
the film ‘dutch new york’ brings the complex and fastinating story and foundations of the curiously unique aspects of america’s new amsterdam/new york to life. thank you Thirteen! -h
As a direct descendent of Adriaen vanderDonck and Peter Stuyvesant (through marriage, as he married a VanderDonck), I must say I have a new interest in reading my family history book, and asking more questions about my family history. I so would love to have my family history investigated by “who do you think you are”. Great job PBS. it is a fastinating story .
Just before Professor Goodfriend starts to speak about the printing press (approxiamately 51:55 into the video) there is a picture of a New Amsterdam Street Scene. Can anyone identify the Street and Houses displayed here. My father bought a print of this picture in the 1970’s published by Channel 13 and The New York Historical Society. I think that the print was a benefit of his joining Channel 13 or perhaps the Auction that was on TV to benefit the station. If anyone could help I would greatly appreciate
Please send me program information regarding Channel 13 by E-mail..
Thank you!

A truly excellent production, though I was hoping for more on Fort Orange and the Dutch settlements up the Hudson.
I’m interested in the commercial and political rivalry of the Hudson Valley Dutch and the Mohawk Valley English leading up to the Revolution.
Barry Lewis spoke to the students on campus at Saint John’s University this past week and was fabulous. His presentation “New York in 20 Minutes” touched on the Dutch influence on the culture of New York City. Any time Channel 13 and PBS have Barry Lewis involved on a documentary project, it is bound to be sure hit.

Simply fascinating, how Dutchs shaped the culture of NYC, Loved the role of Adriaen vander Donck how he preceived New Amsterdam, excellent documentary by Barry Lewis
of the many video clips that i download, i always watch those that are very funny ;~”
This video is great! Very detailed and nicely told.
Very nice documentary. Also as a Dutchman I can learn alot of historical facts from tv shows like this. I did miss a few historical facts by the way. For instance: The Dutch were not overtaken by the English in one attempt. After the English took New York the Dutch took it back in 1673 by force. It was briefly after (1674) when the Dutch gave back (what was now called) New Orange to the English in a political trade. New York was traded for a country near Brasil (Suriname) and then became New York perminantly. I would have liked to see that fact come back in this documentary. Despte that: great job! I’m happy to see that New Yorkers hold their Dutch history high and refuse to forget
I love the idea of Freedom of Conscience by the way. It will never be outdated to think that way.
As another one of New Amsterdam’s direct descendants (of Stuyvesant’s nemesis, Patroon of Staten Island, Cornelis Melyn) but also a life-long New Yorker, I am so glad Barry Lewis has done such a great job sharing with Ch. 13’s audience what some of us have been researching for decades, esp. after being helped greatly by R. Shorto’s “Island at the Center of the World” highlighting Dr. Gehring’s invaluable and heroic translations. I used to look out at New Amsterdam from high up in my World Trade Center office and imagine it all…. I know what Barry felt like on Wall Street ! Kudos, Mr. Lewis, Scott Davis and Dr. Gehring ! By the way, Melyn’s work written for the Council of Eight Men (orig. still at the NY Public Library rare books room) was known as the “Broad Advice (to the Citizens of New Netherland)” and was a lively attack on Stuyvesant and Kieft’s shortcomings. There are some great translations, and it was very cool to finally see the original Dutch text — having passed it 2x/day for 20 years on the subway going up and down “Manahatta !” Regards, B.G.

Great show, great pictures, thanks
Will the show be made available on DVD or downloadable? Why are Dutch subtitles omitted? We are talking about us, aren’t we?
Best regards from a native ‘Old’ Amsterdam citizen in the Netherlands,
Bas
Een verhelderend verhaal over de invloed van de nederlanders op NY.
Is it just me, or is there a striking facial similarity –Adrian Vanderdonck and NY Mayor Bloomberg?
I enjoyed this very much, but was dissapointed not to hear of Arent Van Curler.
I am about the 9th decendent. I visited Schenectedy and Albany 2 years ago and found he was very important in founding Shenectedy. Also love mr.Tantillo’s paintings and own one.
Babe sharp van curler
