Map: New Netherland Colony, 1655

in 1655, Adriaen van der Donck wrote an account of the Dutch settlement in America, A Description of New Netherland (Beschryvinge van Nieuw-Nederlant). The map featured in the book shows Dutch settlements extending from modern-day New York City up the Hudson River to Ft. Orange — the site of Albany today. Use the map controls below to pan and zoom in on various features of van der Donck’s map.
