In 1884, leaders of New York's Jewish community founded Montefiore with the purpose of building a "care facility for patients with tuberculosis and other chronic illnesses." It was named after Sir Moses Montefiore, a prominent philanthropist of late 19th century. The Medical Center led the way in tuberculosis research, diagnosis, and treatment and developed the first cardiac pacemaker. Montefiore has since become a pioneer in community medicine with departments in social services, home health care, and social medicine. Montefiore's many medical departments and community activities make the institution the largest employer in the Bronx.
