Music at MoMA
The museum will stay open late every Thursday evening in July and August, so you can spend more time in its exhibitions and also enjoy live music performances. The Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Sculpture Garden hosts the musical series MoMA Nights. In July you can listen to Brazilian bands playing a variety of tunes, from Bossa Nova to modern Brazilian jazz. In August you are invited to immerse yourself in the world of French culture through songs inspired by the tradition of “Chanson.” The musical performances from the series Hear France accompany the landmark exhibition Matisse, Radical Invention, 1912-1917.

In performing arts this week, we start with Lincoln Center Out of Doors, which begins on July 28th. The festival celebrates its 40th anniversary with a three-week schedule of free music, dance and spoken word events. Don’t miss the 80th birthday celebration of legendary choreographer Paul Taylor. Well known works, such as Esplanade and Airs, created by Taylore in the 1970s, will grace the Damrosch Stage on August 5th. The human body becomes the main instrument in the New York debut of the International Body Music Festival, which begins August 12th.
Celebrate Brooklyn!
On July 29th. you can experience MI21: Mother India 21st Century Remix, an audio/visual adaptation of a film from 1957. Mother India was the first Bollywood film in tbe nominated for an Academy Award, and it came to symbolise the post-colonial Indian psyche. The compelling imagery of this show is accompanied by the live score of DJ Tigerstyle.
Do you remember Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova? A couple of years ago they won an Oscar for the song “Falling Slowly,” from the film “Once” in which they also starred. They have achieved further success as The Swell Season. You can see them live on July 30th. Another highlight of Celebrate Brooklyn! is the Sonic Youth concert on July 31.
