Only in THIRTEEN Passport
Coming Soon: Whitechapel
Four seasons of Whitechapel cross the Atlantic to land in THIRTEEN Passport on August 1. Set in the Whitechapel district of London’s East End, the crime series has an imperfect leading man: Detective Inspector Joe Chandler, whose privileged background and good looks have fast-tracked him up the chain of command, but who has very little street cred or experience. On his team is the archetypal cynical, seen-it-all-veteran, Detective Sergeant Ray Miles. The first season pits the sleuths against a copycat killer who follows the technique of Jack-the-Ripper, whose 11 unsolved murders in the 1880s were referred to as “the Whitechapel Murders.” The police soon enlist the help of amateur “Ripperologist” Edward Buchan, an expert in historical homicides. In season two, the trio must find out who is modeling their murders after those of the Kray twins in the 1950s and 1960s East London, while seasons three and four have a variety of gruesome history-based whodunits.
Scott & Bailey
All five seasons of the female-forward British detective series Scott & Bailey launched in THIRTEEN Passport in July. The hit program was hailed in England for its authenticity — a natural result of being co-created by Diane Taylor, ex-Detective Inspector at the Major Incident Team at Greater Manchester Police, where characters Janet Scott and Rachel Bailey happen to work. Start watching episodes here, and read up on the series and characters on our British Telly Dish blog.

If you’re a tennis fan eagerly awaiting the August start of the U.S. Open in Queens, NY, there’s one pre-qualifying documentary you have to see: American Masters: Billie Jean King, which leaves THIRTEEN Passport the same day the Grand Slam tournament ends on September 10, 2017. The women’s tennis legend is honored in the name of the venue of the U.S. Open: The USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Watch the documentary online, here.
Summer Flashback: American Experience: Blackout
Penn Station emergency track repairs and MTA subway service have given this season the name “Summer of Hell” in New York, but the troubles pale in comparison to a summer 40 years ago in 1977. New York City was on the verge of bankruptcy, a serial killer named Son of Sam was on the loose and Wednesday, July 13 ushered in a nine-day heat wave that would become the hottest in New York City history. A severe thunderstorm hit, the lights went out, and some eight million people plunged into darkness in New York City and surrounding areas. By the time the power was fully restored more than a day later, more than 1,600 businesses had been looted, more than 3,000 people had been arrested, and firefighters had battled more than 1,000 fires. The affected neighborhoods would never be the same. Watch the full documentary here.
