Field of Expertise
Nathan Seiberg is a professor of mathematical physics at the Institute for Advanced Study. His work focuses on various aspects of string theory, field theory, and particle physics. During recent years, he has found with various collaborators exact solutions of supersymmetric quantum field theories and string theories. These solutions have applications to mathematics, and to the dynamics of quantum field theories and string theory leading to many new and unexpected insights. One of them is the fundamental role played by the "duality" between electricity and magnetism in these theories.
Seiberg received his B.Sc. with High Distinction from Tel-Aviv University in 1977. After service in the military, he obtained a Ph.D. in 1982 from the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel. He was a member at the Institute for Advanced Study from 1982 to 1984. From 1985 to 1986, he was a Senior Scientist with the Weizmann Institute, where he served as an associate professor from 1986 to 1989. Seiberg has been a professor at the Weizmann Institute and Rutgers University. He has been a professor at the Institute for Advanced Study since 1997.
