Field of Expertise
Enrico Bombieri is the IBM von Neumann Professor of Mathematics at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey. Professor Bombieri is regarded as one of the world's leading authorities on number theory and analysis.
In 1974, when he was a visiting Member of the Institute for Advanced Study, he received the Fields Medal, the highest award given in the mathematical sciences. He was cited for his work in both number theory, the study of integers and their relation to one another, and minimal surfaces, the study of multidimensional surfaces.
While his interests range throughout mathematics, Professor Bombieri has been described as a "problem-oriented" scholar -- one who tries to solve deep problems rather than to build theories. According to a colleague, his analytical ability, combined with great powers of innovation, "enable him to recognize elements of a solution that may already be present and to mobilize techniques and results from other fields to reach a final conclusion."
Born in Milan, Italy, Dr. Bombieri earned his doctoral degree at the University of Milan in 1963. He taught at the University of Pisa and at the Scuola Normale Superiore at Pisa before joining the Institute in 1977.
In addition to the Fields Medal, his awards include the Feltrinelli and Balzan Prizes. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Accademia Nazionale dei Quaranta in Rome, the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei, the European Academy of Sciences, Arts, and Humanities, and a foreign member of the French Académie des Sciences, the Royal Swedish Academy and the Academia Europaea.
