Last week, you voted on three films that capture the evolving character of New York City. But we can only air one this Saturday night on Reel 13. So which did you choose?
Winner: Grand Luncheonette
A remembrance of the final days of the Grand Luncheonette, one of 42nd Street’s unforgettable hot dog/lunch counters. Directed by Peter Sillen.
Reel 13 would also like to congratulate the runners-up:
First Runner-up: Urban Rhapsody
Shot as a documentary and edited as a music video, “Urban Rhapsody” is a study of the attitudes and gestures of Brooklynites. The words of the Spoken Word group Second 2 Last provide the narration for this whirlwind tour through the diverse neighborhoods of the borough that inspires their poetry. Directed by Basia Winograd.
Second Runner-up: NYC Weights and Measures
Jem Cohen’s film opens with a parade for astronaut John Glenn, then makes its way across boroughs and time to explore New York City’s many moods, from loud and relentless to grave and dreamy. Directed by Jem Cohen.
Reel 13 airs Saturday, May 31st at 9pm on Thirteen. This week’s classic is “The Apartment,” followed by “Grand Luncheonette” and the indie feature, “Long Life, Happiness & Prosperity.”
