Exclusive Interview: George Carlin on Comedy
July 1st, 2008 at 1:44 pm

Carlin was interviewed on July 21, 2006, for the upcoming documentary on the history of comedy, “Make ‘em Laugh”. Here are a few sections of that interview; he talks about how his comedy is actually about using surprise, about parental censorship, and about how he considered himself a writer who entertains rather than a comic.

“You want to lead ‘em down one path and then deliver an unexpected line or image. And it produces a laugh.” - George Carlin

A brilliant entertainer, comedian or comic who wrote his own material will be sorely missed. I miss you already George. R.I.P. Hopefully Jesus will bring the porkchops soon… I’m starving!

George opened up freedom of speech, and it was a deeper contribution than just the words. Most everyone knows this. But, I always felt that he was giving us a great lesson in many areas, religion being another one of them. You are really missed George

George offended the fuzzy-furry-freaking-flying-rats hell out of me a lot of times. On the other hand, I’ve finally come to learn: “Nobody has any more true freedom than the least popular segment of our society.” I have to go now so I can cry privately.

The Greatest Comic of All Time…he did the best for the longest to me that’s how u qualify for the title. 45 years of quality comedy, even when he was growing and maturing as a comic in the early years he still put out quality material…R.I.F. Rest In Funny Carlin

This is a tribute to the Greatest man who ever lived George Carlin, a teacher, revolutionist, comedian a man who pushed the line and made us all think and ask questions that mattered most. He was my Hero in every way he shaped my mind, heart, politics and passion. He was my inspiration and life coach. His brilliant usage of words as well as his well-established disdain for those offended by the them, has and will continue to inspire generations to come, hopefully. The world lost one of it’s brightest star lighting our way today…. There are no words to express how much he will be missed and how much we have lost from his departure. If there need be a religion let it be comedy, If there need be a god let it be George Carlin…. Rest In peace George you gave so much to us all…..

Never before has a comic been loved by so many and at the same time hated by quite a few to (probably religious nut jobs and soccer mom’s). George will without a doubt go down as one of the all time great comics but more importantly he will be remembered by his views on the world… politics, religion, sex, you name it! I have personally idolized his work for years and I will greatly miss not having him around.
We’ll miss you George :(

All the wonderful comments that people are writing are making me cry. I am so thankful that unlike many artists he was actually appreciated and successful while he was alive. And he lived to enjoy it and share it and always question why. Thanks to the fans that supported him and the warm wishes sent from around the globe. George Carlin fans are the most insightful people that I have ever met. When you meet one another theres always so many things are left unsaid because the same wavelength is in everyone of us. Thank you George for creating that wavelength I will feel it in my bones for the rest of my days.

I am so fortunate that I got to live my life and have George there to enrich it. He is a NATIONAL TREASURE which we should all be grateful for, because he made us THINK about things. Nothing was to trivial for him. This was his life and I am so grateful that he shared it with all of us.

i am one of the few young adults that have the privelage to say that i spoke with george carlin on KLOS radio show, and had the opportunity to see him live. When i was 15 that was my main goal was to see him live before he passes. and at 20 years old i fulfilled my goal. It was one of the most influental moments of my life. George carlin wasnt just a comedian. He was an inspiration. He was one of the greats. Rest in peace george. for i will never forget the conversation we had.

A brilliant man. If I were asked to describe him in one word, I would say, “evolved.” George was a highly evolved individual. We should all reach that level beyond human pettiness.

George was an awesome person. I waited on him at a little greasy spoon in East Lansing after a show he was doing at the Breslin Center. Very nice man. Not wanting over extended attention, he sat at the back of the resturant. Eggs over easy and rye toast kind of a man.
Funny, yet totally on the mark with some political issues, honest to a fault kind of humon. I loved it! The bit about stuff and more stuff I think was my favorite. I will miss his humor and his funny little faces. The Man Was Cool…..

God’s speed George!

When I was 16 years old I worshiped George. I memorized his monologues and performed them in front of my fellow High School students in 1975. He ignited my love of language. Thank you George for opening my mind. I will always be grateful to you for teaching me that the words we use matter.

Some people watch the news or CNN to keep up on the state of the country. I listened to George Carlin. He was informed and gave the information to everyone without any sugar-coating. George often alarmed me with his brutal-truth political views, but I believe it’s good to be alarmed and aware.Who’s going to be on top of things now that George is gone? I always slept better thinking of George keeping his eyes on it all…

George Carlin is and was the only man on the face of the earth who really understood the twisted, underlying works of this once prosperous turned wretched country (and world for that matter). He long ago earned the upmost respect of the people who do live there lives with nothing but common sense. Very few people remember where they came from and it is disturbing. George never did forget and that is why he stood with his head high, chin up, and the never ending desire to tell everyone the truth because it is the only thing that matters.
George Carlin did not want any of us to mourn his death. He wanted us to celebrate his life and never forget who we really are. Thank you George, for being the light at the end of my tunnel. =]

George will be missed. One good reason is there is NO one out there ..NO one .. of religious faith or not .. who is speaking out on the hypocrisies and blunders of our modern culture like he did. God bless ya, George.. wherever God has built your mansion. And I bring religion into this blog because George never put down Christ .. only those who use his message wrongfully.
