Institute Names Top 10 New Species of 2007
Tuesday, June 17th, 2008
Thousands of new species were discovered and described in 2007, highlighting how little is known about the breathtaking variety of life on Earth. Ten of the newly-described species were highlighted last month on a top new species list released by the International Institute for Species Exploration at Arizona State University.
An international panel of experts compiled the list based on criteria ranging from interesting attributes to peculiar names.
Among the Top 10 New Species of 2007:
- A millipede with a brilliant pink appearance (pictured)
- A dangerous box jellyfish, named after a tourist that died from its sting
- A horned beetle that looks strikingly similar to a character from a children’s movie
