Encounters with Sea Monsters
Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

The “Superfish” marine biologist Rick Rosenthal chases in this Sunday’s episode of Nature are among the most elegant and streamlined swimmers in the sea. But what is it like to swim with monsters?

Dancing with Devils
Last year, Nature joined expert underwater cameraman Bob Cranston as he waved off advice from local fishermen along the coast of Mexico in a quest to capture footage of the giant Humboldt squid.

First Glimpse of the Giant Squid
There is one less mystery in the deep sea: in 2005, two Japanese researchers finally photographed a live giant squid, one of the most elusive and mythic creatures on Earth. It was the first time one of the world’s largest cephalopods has been documented in its ocean home. You can also watch a video of scientists dissecting a giant squid, revealing the largest eyes in the animal kingdom — 11 inches in diameter, the size of a soccer ball — at BBC News online.

Send Us YOUR Stories of Close Encounters at Sea
Do you have special memories of time you’ve spent at the ocean — or in it? Have you had a close encounter with marine life? NATURE wants to know about it. Tell us your stories, and read those of other viewers, as we celebrate the world’s oceans and everything in them.
