In this interview from San Francisco, Charlie talks to Evan Williams, the co-founder and CEO of Twitter, one of today’s most popular social networking Web sites. With six million users, it’s an international phenomenon. Watch now.
The act of “twittering” has so become popular worldwide that is has even entered the halls of national politics. Prior to his presidential victory, Barack Obama twittered. And just recently, as Charlie mentions in the interview, Democratic Senator Claire McCaskill of Missouri was twittering even during President Obama’s recent State of the Union address.
“It’s about people connecting,” says Williams about the site. “It really provides people with a new way to communicate that didn’t exist. Once you have it, it’s a perfect complement to everything else.”
Williams explains to Charlie how the site works, why messages are relegated to only 140 characters, and what makes Twitter unique among other social networking sites.
“How the Internet evolved over time,” Williams replies, “is to more efficiently tap the most basic human desires. The desire to connect with other people socially is a big one. I think that’s why social networking in general is very powerful.”
