This Sunday, the final game will be played at Queens’ Shea Stadium before its primary resident, the New York Mets, move about fifty feet away to their new ballpark — Citi Field — opening in 2009.

While Shea can’t lay claim to the decades of storied history of its fellow ballpark in the Bronx, it has done its best to pack nail-biting, hair-pulling and rally-cap-wearing moments into its 44 years of existence.

Here are five Shea moments sure to live on after the stadium’s demise. Please share your favorite memories of Shea below!

• April 17, 1964 – Opening Day at Shea – National League baseball returns to New York after a seven year absence created by the departure of the New York Giants and Brooklyn Dodgers.

• August 15, 1965 – Beatlemania in NYC - In the first concert held at a major outdoor stadium, the Beatles rocked to a frenzied crowd of 60,000 screaming fans.

• October 16, 1969 – The Miracle – The “miracle Mets” complete an upset of the favored Baltimore Orioles and clinch their first World Series championship. Look back at the summers of ’69 and ’86

• October 25, 1986 - Behind the Bag! – The Mets come back from near elimination to defeat the Boston Red Sox in Game 6 of the 1986 World Series with an infamous error by Boston’s Bill Buckner. The Mets went on to win the series in 7 games. See the game’s final play

• October 2000 – Subway Series – New York baseball fan dreams came to life as the Mets and Yankees played each other in the Fall Classic. The Yankees won the series in five games, with the championship clinched at Shea.
