Our Shakespeare in the early 21st century seems to be the religious Shakespeare and, for some, a militantly Roman Catholic Shakespeare. He’s recently been cast or viewed as part of an underground movement of secret Jesuit priests and recusant British aristocrats who wanted to consign Queen Elizabeth’s Protestant England to “the old religion” and restore loyalty to the papacy.
