This Day in History: John Lennon Shot, Dec. 8
Monday, December 8th, 2008

On December 8, 1980, singer John Lennon was killed outside his New York apartment building, on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, opposite Central Park. Lennon, a former member of The Beatles, was shot to death by Mark David Chapman, who meticulously planned the murder, believing it would make him famous. Following his death, hundreds of fans mourned outside Lennon’s apartment and around the world. John Lennon is memorialized in “Strawberry Fields,” a section of Central Park that Yoko Ono landscaped in honor of her husband.

John Lennon’s Jukebox
Lennon has captivated fans across generations with music that defies easy categorization. The discovery of Lennon’s old Discomatic from the 1960s, containing his collection of 45s, prompted the making of “John Lennon’s Jukebox”, which offers an in-depth exploration of the musical influences that shaped his songwriting. Get to know some of the artists whose 45s were found in Lennon’s jukebox. (Originally aired: 9/8/2004).
