This Day In History: Bette Midler Born, 1945

Singer Bette Midler was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, to the only Jewish family in the area, on December 1, 1945. She has won four Grammy awards, four Golden Globes, one Tony Award, three Emmy Awards, and sold more than 15 million albums. She is currently performing with Elton John and Cher in a new show called The Showgirl Must Go On in Las Vegas.

Charlie Rose interviews singer and actress Bette Midler about her extensive career in film, television, recording and concert work, her CD “Bathhouse Betty”, her early years performing in gay bathhouses and the challenges of fame. She also discusses her love for urban planning and development, her musical influences, Johnny Carson, President Clinton and some of her favorite career moments. The interview runs 60 minutes.

Bette Midler saves the day in my new book Ghost Music of Vaudeville. And she surely could in real life. She is one GREAT lady. We are a better world for her presence.
