Junot Díaz Wins National Book Critics Circle Award, and Now Pulitzer Too
Tuesday, April 8th, 2008

Update: The Pulitzer board just announced its picks for 2008. The Brief and Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao Junot Díaz nabbed the Pulitzer prize for fiction.

Over at Critical Mass, the National Book Critics Circle blog, Marcela Valdes describes her first experience reading Dominican- born, New Jersey-raised writer Junot Díaz:

I still remember the first time I read Junot Díaz’s story “How to Date a Browngirl, Blackgirl, Whitegirl, Or Halfie.” My reaction to it was physical. A few paragraphs in, my arms and legs began to tingle. I could hardly believe that Díaz was writing what he was writing—a minute dissection of how a Latino man alters his behavior depending on the color of the girl he’s trying to seduce—and I was thrilled to see him tackle such a taboo subject with intimacy and panache.

In February, Junot Díaz won the National Book Critics Circle award for his novel, The Brief and Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao. Before the award was announced, Díaz sat down with New York Voices host Rafael Pi Roman to discuss his work.
